Am I the only person who prefers books written in third person? I am disappointed in the number of books written in first person lately.
I feel like I miss so much of reality when the entire story is told from one perspective. For me, the beauty of books over movies is the depth of thought and character that can be built into books. With first person narratives, it is always a one-dimensional view, the view of the character's voice. With multiple first person voices, a more nuanced and vibrant world can be created, but just as in real life, the edges don't always match up, and as a reader, I find myself wondering about the reality that exists between the readers viewpoints.
Sometimes, it works. Sometimes, I get it. But mostly, it feels less than. Even books written from multiple first person perspectives usually leave me feeling meh.
How about you? Do you prefer first person perspective when you read? Or do you prefer third person perspective?
I wonder if it is a generational thing? Any and all replies welcome!
