“We’ll talk tonight, Beth. I can’t know how you feel, or what you are going through, but I know what I saw with my Dad and Jessie. Falling in love with Jessie in no way diminished what Daddy had with my Mama. If anything, their love honors the love my Dad and Mom had. And Daddy needed fourteen years to get to the point where he was ready to love again. There isn’t a rule book. Tonight, you can talk and I’ll listen, and hopefully you’ll feel better.”
All four girls came running into the kitchen.
“Do you not feel well, Mommy?” asked Michelle. “You’re not sick are you?”
“No, baby. Worried about grownup stuff that Ms. Rosadel will help me feel better about.
You don’t need to worry.”
“So, Mommy,” said Michelle, “Ms. Rosadel makes you feel better just like Lou and Grace
and Rosie make me feel better?”
“Exactly, baby. We never get so old that our girlfriends can’t help us to feel better.”
To all the girlfriends out there, and you know who you are, that always make us feel better. Thanks for being you.
